Lithuanian language in the new Irelands' Strategy for Foreign Languages in Education
The Minister for Education and Skills, Richard Bruton, launched the government’s Strategy for Foreign Languages in Education 2017-2026 on 4th of December, 2017. The strategy includes a detailed five-year implementation plan, setting out a series of 100 actions and paying much attention to Lithuanian language.
First of all, implementation of the newly developed Junior Cycle short course in Lithuanian has been included in the strategy and will be available from September, 2018. The strategy contains a number of actions, including the introduction of curricular specifications for heritage speakers for Polish, Lithuanian and Portuguese and development of Leaving Certificate syllabuses for these languages. The Strategy will allow Lithuanian along with other languages to be put on the curriculum for Leaving Certificate students who enter fifth year in September 2020. This means that pupils who are currently in second year will be able to take a Leaving Cert exam in one of these languages for Irish schools.
