Twenty years ago, on 13th January 1991, the citizens of Lithuania defended their freedom by means of peaceful civil resistance against Soviet military attack.
Fourteen people were killed and thousands injured on that day, when Soviet troops stormed the Lithuanian Radio and Television building and the television tower, which were surrounded by peaceful defenders.
Unarmed civilians defended their freedom against the military power, as Soviet forces attempted to take control of Lithuania after the Lithuanian Parliament proclaimed the restoration of independence on 11 March 1990.
The events of 13th January not only consolidated the sovereignty of Lithuania but also contributed to the deconstruction of totalitarianism and the development of freedom and democracy in Europe.
