EMBASSY INVITES TO VISIT EXHIBITION BY RENOWNED LITHUANIAN ARTISTS DEDICATED TO LITHUANIA‘S PRESIDENCY OF THE COUNCIL OF THE EUROPEAN UNION

The Embassy invites to visit exhibition “Independent stories“ by seven renowned Lithuanian artists which will be displayed at the European Commission Representation in Ireland (18 Dawson Street, Dublin 2) from 2 to 24 September. The exhibition is free and open to all on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. „Independent Stories“ is a unique project created by a group of Lithuanian artists. This series of paintings consists of artistic interpretations of the flags of European Union states, seen through the prism of individual experience and personal associations. The project was developed to mark the Millennium of Lithuania in 2009. The cycle of works includes pieces of art by Linas Liandzbergis, Vilmantas Marcinkevičius, Kęstutis Grigaliūnas, Marius Jonutis, Dalia Kaščiūnaitė, Rūta Katiliūtė and Audrius Gražys. Two among these Lithuanian artists, winners of awards and scholarships, are also recipients of the Lithuanian National Culture and Art Award. Each of the flags in the cycle was created by several artists. The images unite different styles and outlooks, and the individual quality of each painter is easily recognisable form their authorial handwriting. The works were made in order to give sense to the artists’ experience, reveal their association, share their respect for and express admiration for each of the EU member states. While keeping the individual structure of each flag, they have extended and personalised the traditional colour symbolism to create their own narratives, infused with allusions to national character, history and popular landmarks. This extraordinary project is an independent statement offering a visual interpretation of the symbols of state and history in a context other than official.
