Lithuanian diaspora in Ireland together with Irish friends, county councils members commemorated Lithuanian Statehood Day on 6th of July. People in the whole Ireland banded together to sing Tautiška giesmė (National anthem of Lithuania) to pay tribute to Lithuania. The melody of a national song was widely spread around  Dublin, Dundalk, Galway, Carrickmacross, Carlow, Cavan, Killarney, Cork, Monaghan, Limerick, Laois, Mullingar, Tullamore, Ballinrobe. Ireland was honoured as well as the melody of Irish national anthem followed.

Irish President Michael D. Higgins who is on an official visit to Lithuania, marked the beginning of a new significant cooperation with Kaunas City and Lithuania. During the solemn reception at the Kaunas City Hall, three agreements were signed in the field of science and education.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Linas Linkevičius, took part in a solemn meeting of the Senate of Vytautas Magnus University on 20 June where President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, who was paying a visit to Lithuania, received the academic regalia of Honorary Doctor of Vytautas Magnus University.

uesday, June 19, Vilnius – President Dalia Grybauskaitė met with the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, who arrived on an official visit to Lithuania. The meeting focused on bilateral relations between Lithuania and Ireland, cooperation within the European Union and security issues. The Irish President came to Lithuania together with First Lady Sabina Mary Higgins.

June Molloy, a Wexford author currently living in her husband's home country of Lithuania has written a new book entitled Guardian of Giria which was launched in the Book Centre, Wexford last Saturday with a reading and afternoon tea.

June took voluntary redundancy from her job in Eircom in 2013 and moved with her husband Arunas Vladicka to Lithuania where they live deep in the countryside.

Since then, she has written two books, one on Lithuanian food and cooking and the latest, a novel for older children, inspired by the wildlife of Lithuania.

Guardian of Giria is a forest animal fantasy that as well as being an exciting adventure, aims to teach readers facts about European wild animals. It was published on May 8 and the official launch was held in Wexford.

June has been in contact with County Wexford libraries and a number of local schools which have shown an interest in acquiring copies of the book. She has prepared a number of resources to use in reading groups which can be found online at

In the beginning of May, the Irish Lithuanians’ Photo Club organized their first exhibition “Through The Lens” in Carlow. It attracted not only fellow Lithuanians’ attention, but was also noticed by the Irish. The club members produced 100 artistic photographs that were a big hit amongst the visitors. The main participants of the exhibition were: Lina Šimoliūnienė, Gražina Grasienė, Giedrius Rasimavičius, Kristina Kairienė, Vaidas Kurmauskas, Alina Williams, Liudmila Mendelienė,  Eglė Morozaitė, Viktoras Gečas, Gintautas Čepaitis, and Lina Bechara. However they were not the only ones whose work was presented. Other photographs exhibited were collected from various contests organised previously by the Photo Club. The Mayor, Jim Deane, participating at the opening said that this exhibition not only beautifully presents Lithuanian art but it also symbolizes the friendship between our two countries.

Only six months have passed since the beginning of 2018 but Lithuanians in Ireland have already raised 5,900 euro and over the past four years – more than 100,000 euro for children suffering from oncological diseases in Lithuania.
